Ahwatukee veteran grabs gold in wheelchair games

He got the gold - again.

And on Friday, John Tuzzolino of Ahwatukee will celebrate his gold medal at a victory celebration.

He won in weightlifting by body weight in his class in the open division at the 29th annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Spokane, Wash., hailed as the world's largest wheelchair sports event.

Tuzzolino, who served in the Army from 1989 to 1991, was one of four Valley athletes competing in the games. Returning athletes Tuzzolino, Dan Koston of Phoenix and Diego Suazo of Surprise as well as newcomer Mark Peterson of Glendale also competed.

Tuzzolino is scheduled to join Koston, who got the gold in billiards, and Suazo, who also won a weightlifting gold medal for his weight class, in a celebration Friday atthe Phoenix VA Health Care System Medical Center. They'll cut a congratulatory cake and be on hand to meet with patients and staff.
